Betty Gallardo

Abstract: A Latino Counselor introduced Betty Gallardo to the Puente Program after having an experience in middle school. This was a life changing experience that led her to apply and get accepted in the Puente Program in high school.

Betty was born in Jalisco, Mexico and with her parents’ decision to have a better future the family decided to immigrate to El Norte. Her older siblings, without much guidance from anyone got through some college but were unable to finish. However, in 2003 Angelica was the first to graduate from a four-year University with a bachelor’s degree in Business.

As soon as Betty was introduced to the Puente Program, getting into college became very important. She was expected by her family to attend the local CSU like Angelica and was surprised as she decided to attend Saint Mary’s College. “Breaking out” was a new experience for Betty and her family when she decided to go away to college. Nevertheless, her family has been the best support system.

Betty decided to major in Psychology with an emphasis on child and adolescent development. She is well aware that with a higher education, her family and generations to come will experience “upward mobility”. At times she questions herself if it is worth giving up part of her culture. Although she’s had many questions along her college experience she is certain that both her sister Angelica and her have made the right choice by becoming the first-generation to attend college. Betty will soon graduate from Saint Mary’ College in May 2006 and hopes to attend a graduate program in Psychology. With Betty’s higher education she also wants to go back to her community and help others in need.
