Abstract: Veronica Lopez Gonzalez was born and raised in the rural town of Ukiah, California. Both parents came from Paredones, Michoacan, Mexico to the US, looking for a better life for themselves as well as their children.
When I began my education I struggled with the language barrier because I went back and forth between countries. For me it was one of the most crucial times because I was stuck between two languages where I didn't have a solid foundation for either Spanish or English.
Because of my parents' lack of education, there were not able to get suitable jobs, only the blue collar jobs which they presently work in. Unlike my older sister, I had a dream to further expand my knowledge. I decided to break the typical stereotype of a Mexican woman who marries at a young age.
Even though other people encouraged me to go to college, the motivation to strive for success came from within. The lack of knowledge in the application process was very difficult. On the way I was fortunate to find the right people, such as school counselors, friends, and family that were willing to give up their time to help me.
Finding resources to pay for tuition was a challenge that I am still struggling with today. Despite the many obstacles I am still working on overcoming, I am currently on my way to accomplish my dream of becoming a first generation college graduate. I want to prove all those who did not believe in me that even against all odds, everything is possible.
