Abstract:  I, Omar Martinez come from a large Mexican Family that immigrated to the United States in search of a better life. No one in my family, except for my elder brother, had ever attended a college or university. Both my parents have worked very hard so that we, their kids, could obtain a great life. They have always believed in us and want us to succeed in obtaining a better life than they were offered. That is why today I am here at Saint Mary’s and why my brother Cesar Martinez graduated from Saint Mary’s in 2004. It has been their dream and goal for us to attend a college or university, since they weren’t able to continue school because they had work to help their parents and family make a living. My family has and always will be my motivation for continuing and succeeding in life.

Today at Saint Mary’s whenever I feel that I can not accomplish any certain goal, I look to them for support or reflect on how much they love and believe in me. Everything I have and the person I have become I owe to them. Because of their love, support and belief in me, I am proud to say that I am a student at Saint Mary’s College of California majoring in International Area of Studies, with a focus on Europe and a minor in Italian. It is to them that I will dedicate my college degree in May of 2009.
